You are correct. The example I gave was not a misplaced adjectival clause. I tend to refer to anything mis-placed as that. I have never heard of dangling participles etc.

I suppose it was too much trouble for the speaker to say "In court on Tuesday, he admitted downloading..."

or in Malone's example, "Looking through the window, he'd seen her drinking a glass of wine."

It is very generous of you to donate a trophy for the foursomes. I suppose if there had been a trophy in the earlier years, perhaps the joint winners would have played extra holes.

In general, I prefer prizes to be shared. You must have won many chess tournaments jointly, which seems satisfying.

The FA Cup had a perfect solution to a drawn final - a replay.

The high jump was a farce. The 2 joint winners cleared 2.36, both failed at 2.34 on the way down, and if both had cleared 2.32, the bar would have gone up to to 2.34 again (for the third time). The yo-yoing could have continued all night. They should both have been awarded a gold jmedal.

I dont know anything about golf, but I was wondering if Paul (as the generous trophy donor) could decide who had won in previous years. Presumably somebody in authority at the club, allowed the joint winners situation. I suppose when the trophy was donated, they could have played extra golf, albeit several years late.

I agree about the high jump. They jumped for three hours and it could have gone on much longer. They should have agreed to keep failing until it got down to, say, 0.1 m by which time everyone would have gone home.

Compliment rather than complaint, for once. We've just been to the Booths store in Settle, where the fast checkouts were labelled "10 items or fewer"!

Helpful Email from Northern Powergrid yesterday about Storm Lilian included this advice:
If you experience a power cut, the easiest way to report it and access the latest information is via our website
How, exactly, if there's no power?

ChrisE, I'm sure I was able to use my mobile, go on the internet, when our area suffered a major power cut... Many data packages don't need to be tied to the home router/network/whatever.

Southbound on the M6, just before exit 36, large sign that included
"Lake District Peninsulars".
The smaller sign on the roundabout spelled "peninsulas" correctly, though.
