I've just had an Email from the golf club to inform me that the greenkeeper is off with corvid....

That's a neat summary, but I had better not tell Cassie that she is considered an "old bird".

I have heard people pronounce it Corvid, but never seen it spelt wrongly.

Malone and Jigjag, I'm not saying you're wrong to call them adjectival clauses but I am doubtful. I'm inclined to call them unattached participles, also known as hanging/dangling/misrelated participles, or even misplaced modifiers. I'm happy to be corrected.

Greenkeeper with corvid indeed.

Our greens sometimes get damaged by crows.

I have been getting pedantic about our golf competitions. Twice in recent years a knockout final (singles and foursomes) has been agreed shared when tied after eighteen holes. They should have played extra holes. As it happens I have just donated a trophy for the foursomes now that it's been going for eight years. In backdating the engraved names I called the shared year 'not completed' in contradiction of the four names on the website winners section. We only missed one year through covid and that reads '2021 Covid'.

I admire the two Olympic men high-jumpers for not taking up the option of sharing the gold medal. They battled it out in a jump-off.

Orson, I couldn't remember (if I knew) the technical name for those ... badly worded phrases, I think I just used 'adjectival clauses' as it was mentioned in a nearby post! I'm happy enough just to get the pleasure of being annoyed when one of 'them' comes into view.

For some time we have had oystercatchers poking their bills into our greens, but the crows watched and copied them!

Years ago, on holiday in Portugal, some friends and I played a 37th hole - lots of people have played 36 in a day, but not many 37! As we approached the green (it was dusk), there were about 30 hoopoes on it - probably the greens were the only parts of the Algarve soft enough for them to get their beaks into....

I disagree about the sharing. I've always thought that England and New Zealand should have shared the 2019 cricket world cup (especially as Stokes's boundary off a deflection shouldn't have been given!)

Maybe sharing the 2019 Cricket World Cup would have been a just outcome, but only because the umpires had failed to uphold the rules towards the end. It is not right to tweak the rules during any competition.

I see that in 2023 the Super Over, if tied, would have been repeated until there was a winner.

I don't think the FA Cup has ever been shared. Although a penalty shoot-out is unsatisfactory as a decider, no one has come up with anything better.

Re penalty shootouts. Perhaps musical chairs would be a more entertaining alternative?
