I suppose it was the dreadful Alex Hartley. You would think Atherton would know better with his education. If one of them makes a mistake the others perpetuate it e.g. stonewall

More evidence of ignorance about lie, lay etc.

BBC News - Lavender field 'being killed for social media posts'
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cnk4w4w53x8o

'Visitors had sat or laid in the lavender'
'lain' please!

Also the caption for the picture: '...the temptation to lay on the lavender.'
'lie' please!

I've just seen a TV advert for an air freshener - can't remember which - that claimed to be "aerosol free" just before finishing with a clip showing it emitting an aerosol - i.e small droplets of a liquid suspended in a gas (air, in this case).

It was AirWick. They obviously don't know what "aerosol" means. Rather like adverts referring to "omega 3" oils - there was a long article in the Guardian last week extolling their virtues, and I've even seen New Scientist get it wrong.

(It's omega-3, where the "-" is "minus", meaning a carbon-carbon double bond three from the end of the chain.)

Chris, Iā€™m afraid that battle was lost long ago. You are correct of course in the definition of aerosol, but it has come to mean having an added chemical propellant to release the product. One more example of abuse of language. Sadly, it makes us less educated as a whole.

Wonder if general dumbing down is actually not a bad idea?

Paul

There were a lot of lays and lies at the golf on the radio yesterday.

Did I hear a golfer say something like "I had lain a few shots back, so when I had a bad lie, I decided to lay up. I was laid back about it and it worked."

I didnt know what he meant but it sounded correct.

It must have been an American. Was it Sheffler or Shuffler?
