Greengage, I'm also three short 🤔

I'm in the same position as greengage, plus I have only three of the seven differing entries. Given the preamble gives no indication to the contrary, I assume the final grid contains real words?

Perhaps you're not thematically treating one of the words you're seeing.

Brendan that’s understandable. In my post #9 I did wonder whether people might think it should be 37. I would have left it at that had 40 not been specified

I'm pretty sure I've finally got the 40 cells but I only have 3 entries that differ from their answers and, despite your earlier post, I still don't fully get the wordplay in 38a where it looks like there are two extra words?

I think I'll put this aside for a while and start on the IQ - maybe when I come back to it it will all become clearer:-)
