I found the song items buried in the grid to be more straightforward than the directions imply… Only two seemed adjusted in any way. I will wait for insight as the evening goes on and more of your post!

In puzzle 4728 did anybody else highlight ALES (vertically in column 3) instead of BEER? I doubt whether JEG will allow it, but imho it is equally valid.

Was being dumb - had 7 changed entries already!

OptO, it had to be beer, not ales, because the b is the first letter of barley

Thanks dsc. Since posting, I have also realised that the title of the puzzle (BREAM) is a cryptic reference to AMBER LIQUID, which is singular, so only BEER will do.
