I am probably going wrong somewhere. I only have a passing aquaintance with the theme so please forgive me.
I have followed the sequence to move 7 letters from their starting place to an empty square.
The first six of these letters spell the first six letters of the answer but the 7 th move concerns moving the sixth letter again. I dont move an “R”. My answer has 7 letters ending in an R, without the possesive. I dont see how where the letter lands (the end of the journry) gives another letter.

Smithsax - sounds like you are nearly there. Your first 6 move should be to empty squares. Your seventh should be to an occupied square. Think about what would happen to the occupant of this square in a real game.

Ah yes. My mistake was the run the moves a couple of times to check - and the second time I forgot that I had already removed the R. After that I could not see it again.

As a very occasional user of this forum, I have found it to be a rather pleasurable and interesting experience. That is, until your entry some weeks ago. You seem to have no understanding of the ethos of the forum and an ability{ or failing} to present unreasonable arguments without ever giving consideration to the views of what I am sure is the great majority. Rather sad.

SH we’ve corresponded on the other thread and are in broad agreement. Just wanted to clarify the point about the first part of the message in light of your comment to SmithSax. Agree that in the real “arena”, the first six moves are to empty squares and the last move isn’t. This was where we thought the first part of the message then applied. If applied first, to what might it apply? We don’t think you carry out the action before each part of the sequence because the verb applies to a singular noun. Just a thought, happy to be shot down in flames.

SS, I think that the first part of the message is just to "make room" for what goes on subsequently. One can nitpick and argue whether the first part literally applies to the second (depends on your interpretation of "these") but logic suggests it must. It's true that the first part also applies to later stages but not, I think, what it was intended for. That's my hap'orth anyway.

Agreed loge. The message from the clues is OBOTTC. TTC says ETL (obviously all TT given context), PATM. So we erase all TTC, PATM, fill the barred cell.

I have been quietly seething over the last few weeks following several posts by ploughty. The latest attack on malone earlier in the thread dismayed me no end but I decided to keep my big old northern neb out of it. However, your post made me appreciate that I wasn't alone in my disquiet with how the mood here has shifted and wish to say that I wholeheartedly support your sentiments.

SH. Think we must disagree at this point. ETL is specifically in the singular. Agree it would be nice to have a clear space to see the sequence, but the TTC is not the full “arena” and lacks a certain elegance. Also your PATM should be DATM we think.
Believe we both know what’s happening and probably agree what goes in the barred cell. Must get out more, or go and floss the dog’s teeth - whether she wants it or not . 😳
