I don’t understand 23. I can get to my answer with the 3 middle letters of a 5-letter word meaning “warning”, plus two letters representing “detective”. But my answer, which seems to be inevitable and correct, doesn’t work with the definition.

I'm sure you have the right word and, if it's any consolation, I pored over the definitions for a good 20 minutes before I twigged.

If you look under the 'transitive verb' meanings you'll see your answer preceded by "inter" - click on this word and all will become clear:-)

Re 28, I finally got the lightbulb to go on. The singer is better known over here I suppose, but I was expecting someone more contemporary.
