I agree with HW7 that the rendition of the tune is a more than decent enough approximation.

Bobby, ring 35 is the nounal participle form (-ing) of a 3-letter verb to mean annoy or irritate, minus its initial letter.

Thanks both. That takes me back over 50 years trying to get my head around gerunds in Latin class.

I started a bit late this weekend and I've found it really tough. I have all the rings and almost all of the radials. But I'm now reduced to staring at 5, 11, 12, 22 and 26. Any hints would be appreciated. I'm amazed how some people seem to have identified the tune from the extra letters before filling in the second ring. How is that possible?

Sorry, 12 should have been H + an unusual word for imposition with 0 in between. Def is routine.

Hi Ukridge,

5 - Is a 6 letters US word meaning "decent chap" minus "caught" - definition is an informal version of a word meaning "chatty remark"

11 - Is a fairly common word for a "covering" and is a 4 letter anatomical word for "the leg" + the "tip of toe" (the beginning not the d that I spent way too long thinking!)

22 - Is a homophone/"reportedly" to "get money" and means "tramp" as in 'prostitute'

26 - "diet" here is the famous one beloved by setters - known by it's full title it contains something that birds love.

5 - Actually I think the "chatty" indicates that it's an informal version of a word meaning "remark" - sorry for the confusion, my friend gave me some painkillers for a sore leg and I'm feeling..... calm but befuddled!

Ukridge, to answer your question: I wrote out the pairs of letters remaining from the first few radials after entering the ring answers, then looked for a combination of one letter from each pair that gave a suitable word. The last few radials were helpful too. Reverse engineering at its most unsubtle, but it worked!
