Getting slightly worried my two letter abbreviation is wrong now as I've tried that and nothing relevant seems to appear.

A really excellent puzzle with some challenging clues. Thank you, Enigmatist! I thought this was at the tougher end of the spectrum and the final step (the Us) held me up for too long in retrospect.

As usual I have a loose end and would greatly appreciate a nudge to resolve it. I can’t for the life of me see the wordplay for 22a: Men ceding acres to stay dogs.

Kitsune, 22a. def. is the plural name for a particular type of dog.
'men' (5) with 1 letter replaced by + 'stray' (3) minus extra letter.

What a beauty! Just about at the limit of my abilities, a couple of nice red herrings, and only fully cracked through a bit of collaboration with a friend who is newly "in our gang". Just racking my brain about the title. I can think of 3 tangentially relevant Georges, but nothing properly linked to the thematic sources.

Help! Found this very difficult, but now have full grid, full set of extra letters etc. but the choices for the highlighting make no sense at all to me in relation to any theme, nor can I see what to put in the bottom row. I am obviously being very dense. Can anyone give me a hint without giving the game away entirely?
