The title is the only thing still defeating me.

I've figured it all out except for 34D--anyone care to throw me a lifeline?

I agree with everyone else: for the longest time, I couldn't see what the point was of the whole exercise, but when the penny finally dropped, I was floored by the cleverness of the whole thing. Bravo!

It is a 6 letter word for a verse which loses its first letter (the extra one for this clue) and the second (timeless). The resulting 4 letters are preceded by an abbreviation for the state where Albany is. You will then have the name of a lake that only enthusiasts have ever heard of.

No, it's not the name of a lake (I don't think); it's a word meaning lake in Bantu

I've cracked the title now, and also realised Enigmatist was being far cleverer than I had first guessed. What an endgame, shame you can finish it without realising just how brilliant it is.

Can you give a hint to explain the title? I've done the rest and agree it's brilliant.

I have at last worked out the bottom row, the 2 letter abbreviation and the relevance of the title. But the highlighting of the U letters is defeating me. I understand the hints from the extra letters in the clues but cannot decide which of the various options to highlight. Hints please, anyone?
