ptobes - have you tried writing out the various options for the U letters and seeing if anything pops out?

Amazing how posting a cry for help can clear the mind! All done now - didn't help that I had some wrong characters in the bottom row - and now it's completed I have to agree, it's a brilliant puzzle. I wasn't feeling quite so magnanimous an hour ago!

Agree with all the earlier comments. Absolutely excellent. I loved Enigmatist's last puzzle (the Spice Girls one), and this may be even better.

Still have 4 loose ends on parsing the word play, despite some earlier hints on some of them:

26d, 31a, 41d, 46a

And also still don't understand the title...

Figured out 26d now

31a - think Charles Lamb. Short informal word for as missing a letter before and a letter for about after.

46a - "I" from the clue then 3 letter "see" (think cathedral cities) minus extra letter + 3 letter "wrong" both reversed/"counter"

41d - 3 letter "a little bit" + 3 letter "religious" minus extra letter
