Came to this puzzle a little late - tough solve, but a truly excellent crossword - thanks to Enigmatic.

1a very useful and I've done NE now, but 4a I still can't see. Definition is first word?

Lumen, yes definition is first word and the wordplay is in 3 parts: 4(-1), 1, 3.
I'm stuck on 21a, and 11d even though I have all the checked letters apart where they cross. Would appreciate any clues!
