Thanks to lewap at 64, the last penny finally dropped. What a brilliant crossword. Well worth the time and effort taken to solve it.

Starting this one a bit late! I have the top 5 rows complete and 5 entries in the bottom half. It's slow progress...

I need help with 48a Midlands town one please. Just the bottom centre area to crack!

Lumen, 48a. is 'goes around' (5), with extra letter, + 'remarkable' (4)

Finally got there with the last bit of the endgame. Amazing how you can't see what's in front of your nose

Finally finished this brilliant puzzle. The red herring in the first three U choices threw me for a while, but all eventually became clear. This is definitely a candidate for puzzle of the year, in my humble opinion.

Filled in the main grid, got the alleged hints for what's to be highlighted, though as each is an either/or I'm no further along on those, and the result from entering what I believe to be the correct characters in the bottom row (minus the abbreviation) leads me either to a particular model of Ray-Bans or Son Heung Min's annual salary, and not much else. And it's taken me 2 days to even get this far! I may have to concede defeat :/
