I've got several answers which seem to fit the definitions nicely, but where I can't make out the word play

eg

31ac Lamb...
1d King Henry....
5dn Way...
19dn Airport...
30dn Admire...
32dn The writer...

I also have fort and last letters of 20dn One host.... but nothing that fits makes any sense.

Ideas please

All done apart from the bottom row. I can see how some characters may be input, but I struggle to see others. And I can't fill the 4th and 5th cells without interpreting "of their column" rather loosely. Which probably means I'm barking up the wrong tree.

In four of my down clues the consecutive extra letters are FTGM which cannot be right. How many, if any, are correct?

31a - is the usual Lamb
1d - ''Bars'' = confectionary
5d - 'way' 2 letters inside ww1 slang for dead/useless (minus middle letter)
19d - 'airport' is def - remove 'chief'/1st letter of a 6 letter word 'in the bloody way' (lose the middle of what's left)
30d - 'Admire actor' is two words (4 & 6) then take the extra letter from last word
32d - 'opening' like a first night, perhaps? Insert 2 words for 'the writer renders' (1 & 2) after dropping the extra letter.
20d - 3 letters for 'one' and the extra comes out of the 'host'.

(not sure what you mean by 'fort', will have a think...).

fort was my misprint for first, relating to 19d, which you’ve given me enough help, thanks.

I don’t understand your comments about 30dn, which don.t see to relate to the idea I had!
