Rickye, the abbreviation in Chambers (surprisingly?) is just ON. Which also means "towards" - then stick an I in there...

in 24 the French word for "named" also is French for "said"

For the ring clue you need to take half of a 10-letter word for "concerning international relations" (which is often paired with "immunity") then add an N

Excellent puzzle, enjoyed the gridfill tremendously. Thought I may be defeated half way through but a couple of clues followed by the realisation of what the tune was and fairly plain sailing from there.

Only slight gripe is that the tune sounds absolutely nothing like what it should, but hey ho. Seems to be an alternate version to the traditional one.

I really enjoyed this one, though it was certainly tougher than the last few. Very clever.

I always like to embellish my entries in silly ways when I can, so I’ve bought a music box that operates from paper tape from which you clip the notes, and have recreated the tune here - I’ll be posting it tomorrow with my entry.

Don’t watch it if you don’t want a spoiler for the tune, but this should link to a video of it in all its glory!

Twas me Buzzb, thanks that is much appreciated. I may have dreamed it, but I have a dim recollection that in the very early days of mobile phones I had one (a Siemens I think) on which it was possible to record your own ringtone using a sequence of notes, a feature my supposedly high-tech Samsung doesn't appear to have. Shame, it would have come in handy!

Yes spugh. In year 2000 I was working on a theatre play with a French connection, and I set up my Samsung to play the Marsellaises as a ring tone. I remember entering each note as you say. It gave a ‘compose your own’ option.

The forum is great and so was this puzzle. I have a quibble though. In the wordplay for 37, November is represented by N. My (oldish) Chambers doesn't give that abbreviation under 'N', rightly in my opinion. Is this therefore a crossword convention that is supposed, somehow, to be known to solvers? This abbreviation for months of the year is hardly used in practice, for the obvious reason that it would be ambiguous. Any views?
OK, full disclosure, it took me a while to get 37!
