For me, it served as a hint to the theme - I didn't even notice the "either/or" nature of the thematic down clues at first, but once I filled the bottom unclued row, I had a revelation. But I agree that in terms of executing the final instruction it was not needed.

I really struggled with this one but found it well worth persevering. It is the best I can remember.

Have you completed the third row? This contains a three word instruction and then it becomes straightforward. As we arewell into the week if you can indicate any missing or uncertain letters in that critical row and and, I am sure, others would be happy to assist. It's worth it.

Read the last letters of the even numbered clues.

I’m glad I’m not the only one flummoxed by this (although having never attempted a Listener before I wasn’t sure what I was in for).
So... I got as far as the instruction in the 3rd row, which is clear, but I can’t get any further. I tried the last letters of the even numbered clues per Buddy’s hint but that doesn’t seem to make any sense... am I going wrong somewhere ???

I'm only asking this because I made this mistake, so don't be offended, but are you looking at the last letter of the even clues or even answers?

Jono, the first 3 even numbered clues are 8,12 and 16 and their last letters spell ODD.

You should be able to take it from there.

Ohhh! Thanks both, I was looking at the clues (although yes, Brendan, I did also try the solutions) but working at it as 2, 4, 6, 8 etc...

Oh wow, mind somewhat blown by the construction here, thanks everyone for the hints along the way, I might get hooked on these!
