Irvine is a town in Scotland, so any Scottish town would have done - probably better (from an overseas perspective anyway) to have picked one that's not also in California.

Hi Lewap,

8d - word meaning "bounds" with the last letter/"lowest character" moved to the front/"leading" - definition is a "traditional" word for "beat".

6d - 5 letter word meaning "lost to view" (think of French for 'lost') minus its last letter and reversed "abruptly turning"
