17a - Def is first word, answer 6 letters. Let me know if you need more.

No that’s all I needed thanks.
17 was straightforward, I should have got that.
9d very tough, never heard of that. Also leaves a dubious three letter word at 9d I think, if my S replacement is correct.

Lumen, I think your 9 D will be fine. The singular is in Chambers and I expect it can be pluralised.

Thanks Malone. I wouldn’t have continued this one without help, namely your post way back at #10.
I think it would have been nice to say clash cells contain multiple letters before obeying the instructions. The ‘numbers in brackets are lengths of grid entries’ was a hint, but not strong enough for the challenge presented. For me that spoiled a great puzzle. I remember very recently a Listener preamble clearly saying some cells would contain multiple letters.

Thanks, Lumen. We've had Inquisitor puzzles that've used a similar device, multiple letters, so I'd handled it before. I don't think I'd have liked the 'multiple letters' information as it would have given too much away.

Senile, lockdown dementia - this happens every week - is making it difficult for me to discover the method of entry for those clues for which there are more letters than spaces. If you could point me in the right direction my week would become slightly less miserable. Many thanks. (fleetj@btinternet.com) I do not submit solutions especially those with numerous empty cells.

I seem to be the only one stuck on 48a! Can't make any sense of it. Also, I'm assuming that the first part of this answer clashes with the last letter of 36d to give the ninth thematic name. (I have an entry for 36d, but can't parse it. Any help would be great as I come from the place connecting the three people who contributed to the notable occasion!)
