I found sorting out the two phrases the most difficult part of the puzzle. However once they become apparent the ten cells to be highlighted are quickly identifiable thereby negating a lengthy grid stare, for which I am eternally grateful. I haven't joined the blanks yet, but I'll be interested to see what appears. The second instruction helped me to deduce the 13th "extra" clash quite quickly.
Thanks Smartie.
I'd appreciate a gentle nudge regarding 17a. I've completed everything else and think I have 13 clashes already. Have I got something wrong as I can't find anything in Chambers that works for 17a. Many thanks.
Granama1, 17 A has two of the two-letter word, loved by crosswords meaning 'space', and 'either side of barrel' = another common crossword device, is put inside those. The last letter is in the clue, the definition is 'decoration inlaid'.
I suspect your extra clashes are in 12. It is not the usual spelling.
I was lucky and spotted the likely highlighted letters early so the path was clear and there was no need to solve the anagrams.
Hi Smithsax, yes. I gave 12d a Paddington hard stare and realised my initial entry wasn't specifically american. Can't parse the new version though. It does remove my two spare clashes. I was just looking at the grid for the ten letters, but when I looked at the clashes and how they may join, the down clue anagram revealed itself.
