Thanks, Gem94. But I am surprised that nobody else saw what I did.

Finally got the first square, and got the highlighting. Now, I’m just staring at the shape that’s left, where I cannot see any way of having four identical shapes that form a square, and I’m assuming it must be a 9 x 9 square with a blank in the middle, or am I missing something.
Could someone explain 39 and 35 for me please.

I had to Google it but there is a way of cutting four identical shapes to make a square. I too thought of 81-1 first.

Done it all, except finding the 10-letter word. No real idea what I am looking for. Any hints?

xij For 35 think Rome, with plural significant, for 39 C RAFT separately

Finally finished solving the clues and getting the message but I can’t see how the wordplay for 39 gives CANAL. Obviously the definition is ditch but how does the C + ANAL work? Thanks.

Hi unclued, Witchcraft's => Ditch + craft's; raft (crowd) replaced with anal (obsessive).
