Hi Murky, I think the reason why "words -" is included in the instruction is to steer us to selecting multiple letters from the clues indicated. So "where to find what must be cut..." is made up of 5 letters from 1A, 4 letters from 5A, 3 letters from 12A...etc.

I've finally got an idea of what to do, but still in the early stages. A nudge towards 2d and 17d would be helpful.

Thanks

Meursault, if I've understood you correctly I apply the instruction to any words in the clues that are long enough. I can see that I get sensible words from the first two clues.

I must say I think that is very unclear. The message needed amplifying with a qualification in the preamble. My bete noire is elliptical instructions the meaning of which is pretty opaque.

Thanks for your prompt.

Hello Dylan,

2d is an anagram of tamer sell(3,4). The Australian import is word usage here in the UK. The letter to be changed is d.

Hi Dylan, 17D is an unusual word, beginning with 3 vowels. As Planks says, the a from asking needs to change to k.

Hi Macky, I think you're referring to letters from 12A and 16A which read "...ORNERS F..." I think there should be an apostrophe in there too.

Another entry that troubles me a little is 24ac, where the 'sound alike' indicator sits in the middle of the two options. As the spacing changes with it (and the letter changes to the left), logic says that the grid entry should be for the answer relating to fitly but it isn't too clear. Anyone else notice this?

yes, a comma somewhere would have helped. As it stands either possible entry could be argued as correct?
