How frustrating to get as far as knowing which 'wrong' letters need replacing by 'right' ones for the unchecked cells. I assume i have the correct letters as they tie up with the ones given by Meersault , i.e 2Ts 2Ss & 2Cs by 4Ls & 2Ds. I see there are only 2 unchecked Ts in the whole grid so obviously they need replacing but by which? I can see 5 unchecked Ss and 4 Cs . Obviously I'm missing something but what? On the point of capitulating !

Uncle_W, I don't know whether you need this assistance now, but if there is still a problem, try listing the wrong part name against the clues with replacements (7 iterations) and the same with the right part name (5 iterations)

Got the quote and the idea but still struggling to finish. I have a few clues I'm still stuck on 28a, 33a, 31d and 21a.
I have 7 unchecked letters - 2 Ts, 2Ss but 3Cs not 2 as others have.
My 3 Cs are 4th letter of 10d, 1st letter of 18a and 4th letter of 7d.
Any hints welcome

A slightly belated thanks to those who helped me earlier in this one. Belated, because after the nudges it took me until last night to actually twig and finish it off. A lovely, clever construction, and good clues, but put together it seemed to edge into chore.
Binks, I think all the answer you are looking for are in this thread somewhere, certainly how to deal with the unchecked letters, and once you have done that then the location of the third c should fall out.

So near - I now only have one clue unsolved, 21a. No hints I can see in any other posts here, so it's just me being thick on this one.

I have IE-T but the first letter must be a replacement - I think of a T. The misprint in the clue I am guessing is the last letter of the second word so I am looking for a word used by Edmund or a reference to a poem (My love is like to ice?) but my searches do not yield one and the wordplay is not helping. The refreshments could be TEA?

Any hints very welcome

Hello Binks,

Clashes in first and last letters. T is correct as the first clash.

Def is Edmund's firm with the m being the misprint.

A word for light refreshments with the roman numeral for seventy replaced with an abbreviation for date
