I have the full quote but, worryingly, cannot see how it applies to the corrections. Still struggling with a few answers mainly from clues not containing misprints. Any hints for 1d and 20d would be gratefully received

20d has the misprint in the first letter of the clue. The answer is a type of virtue.

1d I thought was simply a four letter word for a woman followed by a three letter word for an insect. Given that others are struggling with it, though, I'm not so sure.

Thanks Demeter. I think 1d definition is "crawler" with 4 letters for mistress followed by three letters for skedaddle off. Although it is not a misprint clue there are three letter changes in the answer.

Phil, with 35 cells to consider, perhaps multiple instances of the first name get replaced by multiple instances of the second name ?

I thought that too - and wrote a coded list consisting of 7 uses of the shorter name and 5 of the longer, and then went through checking off all the permutations. At the end I am left with the 6 which are unchecked, which I can also identify. However although 2 of the replacements are straightforward, there is ambiguity with the remaining two pairs of two. I've checked and re-checked umpteen times to no avail. A hint as to where I might have gone wrong would be welcome!

I've reached the same position as s_pugh, so I don't think that there's an error. I see that the preamble begins "In 35 answers one 'wrong' letter must be replaced by a 'right' letter", so as long as the replacement letters in the six clues where the replacement letter is unchecked are "right", and the full set of "wrong"/"right" combinations is used up, the solution would have to be considered correct. But I'm uneasy at the possibility of four different correct grids.

wintonian,

You're right to be uneasy.

There's something you're missing.

I have the quote and think I vaguely understand what's going on but I'm stuck on three clues in the bottom left corner. Could anyone give me a nudge for 28d, please?
