For 28d I have that as the answer - but how is the clue parsed? Surely the name of a public school isn't meant to be read as a 'fixed position in space'?

And since when was something that could fly defensibly defined as a 'crawler'? Odd defs are understandable when a misprint has to be forced into them, but that's not the case with this one. Come to that, why not just 'skedaddle'?

US plus TO (fixed position) in EN (space).

Thanks notrab, a clue that was too convoluted for my few remaining brain cells.

All in all this has been a slog - and not a terribly rewarding one. The quotation took ages to find on the web, only coming up (with its following line) when I had deduced and then searched for the entire line from misprints. That provided the only experience that could be described as a PDM, swiftly followed by tedious mechanical substitutions.

And surely - despite the setting constraints imposed by finding words to fit - there's something pretty unsatisfying when the final grid still contains such a host of 'wrong' letters.

Just my personal opinion. Happy to be told I've missed something deeply rewarding.

Thanks for the prompt, demeter. I checked the modified answers to the 29 clues where the "wrong" letter was checked and I can't find any modified form that's a real word. So the phrase in the preamble "usually not making a real word" is perhaps giving a hint about at least some of the other six modified answers, otherwise it would be redundant.

Evenin' all. Been away, so late starting this. I have the quotation and I've sussed out what's going on, and why. I have all the clues solved bar 36D, and I've looked at it for too long. I'd welcome a hint.
