Thanks to all for the hints. I am still completely foxed by 43. My first two letters end non-modified answers (NE) and the next two end modified answers (EE). Where have I gone wrong - please put me out of my misery!

notrab, I think that this clue is problematical because it involves a "clue to a clue" - the wordplay does not lead directly to the letters required but only indirectly. You need to find a four-letter word that is an archaic ("former") synonym for one of the meanings of "Patagonian", and then reverse ("review") it. This gives a word that means "core for lyrist" after making the necessary correction. One of the letters in this answer is "wrong", and replacing it with the appropriate "right" letter gives NEEE as you have already found.

Thank you planks and wintonian. As a Lord of The Rings nut and having just started it again I am ashamed that I had forgotten the Ettenmoors that could have easily guided me to a Giant disovery. All now complete and so happily to supper and a large. perhaps giant, glass of Patagonian wine!

Barretter - if you're using Bradford's 8th edition, the word you're after is indeed in the list for 'lime', not far from the one you've been considering. Serving it up gives you a reversal of a synonym for 'press' plus a single letter.

If you've solved 26, you must surely agree that 'bras' was correct as a hint ...

Demeter, thanks for the info - like all good clues, it's so easy when you see it (which I didn't).

"Where there's dirt there's female support garments" makes no sense to me. My solution is the word for "dirt" minus its last letter plus "i" for "in" plus the last letter of "confusion". I see what you mean about 38dn where "t" represents "it" but I hate this kind of clue built up from fragments. 28dn is similar and not even correct, really.

I struggle with these type of puzzles and long clues for short answers. I have a few but I'm a bit confused. Can any one answer have more than one changed letter in what is actually entered in the grid? I was assuming not but I'm getting in a mess! Am I right in thinking, for example, that because 11a is unchanged, as the clue is pure, then the 6th letter in 1a is the only change in that as no word for 4d would begin lr.

I know very well that the word is "muck". I was trying not to be too open. The expression is "Where's there's muck, there's brass", i.e there is money to be made in salvage. As I said "where's there's muck there's bras" doesn't make any sense .
I withdraw my remark about 28dn. It is correct.
