Hi again,

Always interested in words, expressions, language etc... and unable to resist buying books on the subject, I have ordered the two books Rusty mentioned - Spilling the Beans etc and Dictionnary of idioms.

Looking forward to receiving them - they are second hand so will come from different vendors; delivery a little longer than the usual 24/48 hours bracket.

Pigale, I've now bought quite a few 'used' books from Amazon - I've been very fortunate - all have arrived in near pristine condition - and most only cost me 1p plus £2-80 postage!
I hope you enjoy yours when they arrive!

Elle, I too have always enjoyed good quality items (DVDs or books) bought 2nd hand from Amazon; and as mentioned once before, I myself sell on Amazon, mostly DVDs I do not wish to view a second time. It's very easy and allows me to buy more DVDs !!!

The books ordered are not expensive but I lose out because of the present rate of exchange (Pounds to Euros) and higher delivery charges because not UK. However, it is still very reasonable

Hello, Pigale!
I shall have to stop mentioning books!
But, before I do, can I say that Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable is in a class of it's own.
99% of the books I buy are second hand, and I am grateful to Amazon for their speedy, uncomplicated, service.
As far as I know, there is no way of getting used books on a Kindle, is there?

Hello Rusty !

I was lucky to have received my Brewers as a birthday present from one of my British friends; it's the Millenium edition. I find it very interesting !

I am afraid I know nothing about Kindle ! Out of choice that is, because as far as I am concerned, as long as I can hold a book, nothing will replace the feeling of this book, its smell, etc. I do understand however that it is brilliant for people who have difficulty in holding it.

And if it means that the youngsters are more inclined to read because it is in the modernKindle form, then that's great - at least they will read !

Elle, "can of worms".
"A complicated matter that is likely to cause problems or even scandal. The image is of opening a tin of food and finding inside a mass of writhing maggots that will have to be dealt with, A similar concept to that of Pandora's Box." Brewer's.
I prefer the term "bowel screening kit", rather than "bowel cancer kit"!
Thank you for your kind advice regarding the timing of the procedure.
May I take it as read that you won't require a daily update?
It is a bit cloudy up here but not a bad day for all that!

i have a granddaughter who I gave a Kindle to.
She shares it with Mum!
My next "new" book is published on 8th October.
"The Road to Little Dribbling" by Bill Bryson.
I am looking forward to it!

My Brewers says that a 'tall order' is an 'unreasonable demand' - a 'tall story' being 'unbelievable'

Does your idiom book says the same ?
