hi
I am at a friend's house until after the roads are opened again. (There is a gap of 2 hours when traffic can flow before the professionals come through)
My iPad only works from here with all the flashing ads on. When I turn them off, I lose connection, so I am unlikely to be able to comment on the race until I am home again. Enjoy the ride

Hi, Rusty!
"knee -high to a grasshopper" isn't in MY Brewers! What does it say about the saying in yours?
I've found the bit about Kit's Coty House though. I'd never heard of it before you mentioned it, let alone been there! nor, I am afraid, do I know of Katigern and Vortimer - had you heard of them before finding this reference in Brewers?
I have been to Maidstone though! it's the County town of Kent and quite an attractive town with a river running through the town centre.

White cats are often deaf. I shall have to look this up, but I think it's something to do with a pleiotropic gene - having a pure white coat and blue eyes and deafness. But not all white haired cats with blue eyes are deaf.
Presumably hence the saying "as deaf as a white cat" although I have never ever heard it said .
" as deaf as a doorpost" is the idiom I know?

I wonder if Jazzgirl will still be standing by the roadside waving her placard if she is over at her friend's house?

I love it when the Bulls get the Matadors, also when they get their revenge on those blokes who aggravate them in Pamplona. I do remember seeing,on TV, a bull leaping into the crowd at a bullfight. Talk about panic. I bet the attendances went down a bit after that.

I'd forgotten out the odd-eyed cats, Doglet- I think in cases like that, the deafness affects the blue-eyed side?
That's an interesting point about polar bears!

Polar bears actually have black skins and translucent hair. I don't suppose anyone has ever asked them how they feel about it though!

Well, I didn't know that , Rossim! I learn something new every day on here!
So do they look 'white' because of the reflection of light ?

(no point in wondering if they are deaf because they are white then!)

Polar bears have a very acute sense of smell.
This is their main sense when hunting on land.

I enjoyed Le Tour de Surrey et Londres!
Not so much the racing, but the leafy lanes and byways of Surrey. Very pretty!
Also, the parts of London it went through, with the Thames nearby.
And the weather was kind!
Let's hope the Ride becomes an annual event!

Elle, "knee-high to a grasshopper" is given as very small, if my memory is correct.
Now, Middlesex.
I imagined it to be a county?
But it appears to be part of London?
