Good morning, Rusty!
And what a lovely one it is, too! A very hot night, though - I couldn't sleep so am up very early!
I enjoyed the cycle race yesterday - altho I admit to multi-tasking - one eye on my book, the other on the Surrey countryside. The aerial views from the helicopter were fantastic - such a pretty county.
I hope you liked the views of London, too? Putney is one of the more expensive parts of South West London in which to live - very attractive where it flanks the river.
Yes, Middlesex is a county. (Why do you want to know about Middlesex?)
The counties that abut London, and a couple of others beside, are known as the Home Counties. Middlesex is one of these.
I've got the dentist this afternoon! I finally made an appointment to get my crown fixed! (this has been pending since you broke yours!!)
What are you up to, today?

Good morning, Elle!
Yes, I liked Surrey, too. I had heard of Weybridge, I seem to remember one or more Beatles living there?
And Dorking rang a wee bell.
I was surprised at how leafy London was.
I think it was Wimbledon which appealed to me most. The river ran alongside the road?
I was not at all impressed by the lack of effort and enterprise by Wiggo and his team.
Hopefully your crown is easily fixed. Mine was.
I have to phone hospital. Either they have gone mad or I have.
I had a colonoscopy two years ago, and was told I was being removed from the bowel screening lists, but would get a three yearly colonoscopy instead.
They have sent me the screen test kit on Saturday so I am a bit confused.
It was while watching the Ride yesterday that Middlesex came into my head. I just wondered where it was.
I know they have/had the Middlesex Sessions Court for centuries.
Mind you, on a map, I would not know where Essex or Hampshire were, either. I am better at the oop North counties! Rutland used to be a county, but I have not a clue where it was!

Hi Rusty
Middlesex County no longer exists, but it once did, to the North of the Thames. It went some way to the East and much further to the West. The City of London is also a county- and it still exists, just over a square mile! It even has its very own police force. I had gt gt grandfathers who were policemen in both camps- the one that became Scotland Yard, and the City of London. The latter has amazing archives- they sent me a copy of the reference my gt gt grandfather presented and also a letter from a grateful "client", both from the mid nineteenth century.
Hampshire's in the middle, at the bottom and includes Southampton!

Great, Rosalind!
I admit to being puzzled by Middlesex!
I had it in my head that Judge Jeffreys had a connection with the courts there. Not sure where that came from!
That is very interesting about your ancestors.
Now, I shall just have to find out where Rutland was and why did it disappear!

Ros, I'm afraid I don't understand? I have friends I who live in Miiddlesex, so it obviously still exists as a place. If I look up any reference regarding the area, I'm told that such -and -such is in the 'county' of Middlesex? such as the university there for instance, Google tells me that the Uni is in the county of Middlesex?
Middlesex is still listed as a Home County on various sites?

Good Morning
I'm pleased you cycling fans enjoyed our leafy lanes. There are plenty of those if you explore deeper into the countryside.
I was able to see the race go by, close to my friend's house which overlooks the Thames near Hampton Court Bridge. It was just after 2pm ( before TV transmission began) so you would not have seen that part of Surrey which is a shame.
Wiggo and two others were on their own, behind another small group. I only recognized him by his beard.
rusty: The area where the river Thames runs alongside the road must have been Surbiton which leads into Kingston on Thames.
There is always confusion over Middlesex and whether it still exists. Check it out with Wikipedia.
For nostalgic reasons, a lot of people still write Middx on addresses such as Hampton, Feltham etc.
I have to catch up on chores now. Have a good day

I also have friends who live in Hampton (Middlesex)
The abolition of the Middlesex County Council does not mean the county has been wiped off the map (says I )

Good Morning everyone,

Another very hot morning today, already around 28C, due to go up to 36C !

I did enjoy the race yesterday, and like everyone else I enjoyed most of all the scenery - I know how green London area can be and it was lovely to see the little shady lanes once more. Unfortunately i missed some due to bad connection (had to watched on PC, not adequate TV channels).

Could anyone remind me which part Kew Gardens is?
My husband lived and worked there before we met and we went there together to meet up with his ex partners; I found it very attractive.
