Helli, Elle!
Fine day here, too!
25,000 riders passing through the village will be memorable for Jazzgirl! Like a London Marathon on bikes!
You will be getting better at solving.
It is a continuous process
Sunday is the only day of the week that I do NOT buy a paper! I have a six-day The Times direct debit set up for my paper. I am not convinced of Jericho's demise.
I was having a browse of a book I bought.
Dictionary of Idioms and their Origins. Quite good!
One on the back cover intrigued me.
"Back to square one".
Originated in the days before televised sport when the Radio Times printed a grid of the football pitch so that listeners could follow the commentary of the game!
And speaking of football/TV etc.
I am about to watch a recording of my team, Dundee, winning 4-0 at Kilmarnock yesterday!
We are top of the league!
It was recorded on BBC Alba, a Scots Gaelic channel, so I shall do without the commentary!

Rusty,
Your book on idioms does sound intriguing! there are certainly some fascinating ones - I remember doing a project on idioms at school!
Now, speaking of books.......when I bought Anne Bradford's dictionary - which I have found extremely useful and was a really good buy! - I also bought Chambers Crossword Lists.
This I haven't so far used at all? From what I'd read up about it - and from what had been discussed on the forum - it seemed a good idea to buy it, but obviously I am unsure in what context to use it?
Can you cite an example of when it might come in useful? I'm perhaps being a trifle dim here?
Enjoy your (soundless) football match!

Good Morning all,

Extremely nice day here too, and very warm already.

I am keeping up with the lion trauma and have not found any further trustworthy info on it.

I have signed many petitions against corridas, and I am curious as what you all think of your traditionnal British hunt (fox) ? I know they are considered a nuisance, but they are still animals. Mind you, I don't like any type of hunting !

Hi pigale
I think all types of hunting with dogs hare coursing otter hunting etc The fact that birds of prey are poisoned so that someone can shoot game birds is also wrong.I have just finished reading about animals in WW1 and the fact that the soldiers picked up stray animals and looked after them even a gerbil seemed surreal in the midst of the war

Hello, Pigale!
When it comes to corridas I am very much in the "C'mon the bull!" camp!
I am against fox hunting, stag hunting, otter hunting, and coursing. I am anti anything that harms animals.
And, whatever it is called in Spain, where they throw donkeys from buildings. Barbaric!
I have an open mind about haggis hunting though.
But, I do eat flesh as part of my diet, but very little.

Elle, my Crossword Lists gathers dust too.
I use Anne Bradford's Dictionary regularly.
I like to know the origins of words and bought this book on Amazon. Very readable!

Rusty. I looked up the link about your book. Yes, it does look interesting.
I used an idiom the other day - "knee high to a grasshopper" and thought after I'd said it , how ridiculous it sounded!
Where does the expression come from? does it give an explanation of it in your book?
We are going out for a walk now, so as to be back in time for Jazzgirl's race!
Talk later.....

Morning, Pigale!
At present, we have a ban on fox hunting here - put in place by the Labour government . I believe David Cameron is set on repealing this? but to be honest I don't know much about it - I will look into it later.
Personally, I am dead against fox hunting - or indeed, hunting any animal.
There is a family of foxes living at the bottom of my neighbour's garden ( where it is somewhat overgrown ) and they are quite a friendly lot!

Hi, Doglet!
Reading that info from the National Gallery, I noticed that there is a showing of "The Nun's Story" featuring Audrey Hepburn.
I saw that year and years ago!
I think the exhibition about her should be good?

Elle, "knee high" is not in the book.
it is in Brewer's though.
Near "Kit's Coty House" which is in Kent.
Do you know it well?
"As deaf as a white cat"?

Spilling the beans
I suspect she is looking for a humorous title
