More bad news.
Cecil the lion's brother, Jericho, has been killed by a hunter.

I follow the Bhejane Trust (non-profit organization) on facebook and they announced this an hour ago:

False information being put out about Jericho - brother to Cecil - being shot today. According to Brent Staplekamp at Hwange Lion Research, Jericho was alive and well at 8.30 tonight and moving around Antoinette Estate ( where Cecil was shot) with a female. I can assure you no one is hunting lion on Antoinette after the Cecil incident!!
This false information probably stems from a current Parks investigation into another lion shot on a nearby farm on 2nd July. More information to follow

Yes, I think you are correct there, Rusty. I think the theory is that the new male kills the existing the cubs so that he then has a clear field to mate with the females and produce his own .

It appears that Jericho and the female's GPS collars have been giving out normal movement signals all day showing the two to be together. However if someone had shot them both and was just moving them around, then that would account for the false signals.
It doesn't bear thinking about.

I don't think the male does any protecting.
That is the females role.
I suspect this Jericho minding Cecil's cubs is wishful thinking.
