It is mainly central heating systems, and new bathrooms, etc that my son installs, rather than being a jobbing plumber, but he will certainly replace a washer on a leaking tap for an old lady too, at a sensible price, for that old lady will have friends and family who she will tell about the friendly young man who fixed her tap for her.
Word of mouth is the best advertising there is.
I have suggested to my granddaughter to ignore the idiotic instructions from the education authorities, but she has a very strong work ethic, so she may go looking for a school, if she can get her car out!

Chilblains are very painful and I got them most winters. But it took an hour each way to get to school -a bus, a ship or underground, then another bus or a tram. As you say, we are tough Northeners! Walking is probably better than standing round waiting for a bus from the point of view of chilblains. Do you remember frozen feet? We didn't have nice thick tights, either, as my granddaughter does.
What you said about your parents not owning a car made me think- mine did and my father was collected for and from work. I wonder why my mother didn't take my sister and me to school? Too long out of her day, I suppose. I often did my homework on the journeys.

I remember you once said he ran a good business (I think).

It is indeed a good policy to help an old lady who will pass his name
around - as you say, word of mouth is the best advertising.

I understand work ethic, but if the conditions are dangerous, what
can you do?

Anyway, I am sure she is a very sensible young lady, and will make
an appropriate decision in the morning. As you say, there may be
no pupils to teach!

I can not remember if our school ever closed due to Winter.
It was a long time ago, though, but I don't think it did.
I don't get why BB's school is open those hours.
Why not normal hours?
Could you explain what is "great" about it?
I think I am missing something here!
My friend's granddaughter works on a magazine in Dublin and she was phoned tonight and told not to come back to work until Monday!
She is delighted!

I just wonder how "red" our "Red Alert" has to be before people take heed of it!
"Red Alert" means "a risk to life", the police say.
We should heed them, and not be sending teachers careering around the region looking for a school (with no pupils) to attend!

All schools closed...at last.
I think there is a lot less traffic on the main road.

You are a lot younger than I had envisaged .
I sat my 11+ when I was only 10 . I still don't understand why.
I started high school at 10 (11th birthday was 2 months later) so I had to try hard to keep up with the rest of the class.
I managed to be top in French (where the teacher named me
"La petite Benjamine "

I took the 11+ when I was 10 too, turning 11 a month into my grammar school career. I'm now 65.
What makes me seem older? :)
