I thought this was a really good puzzle but I have a parsing query that I would appreciate some help with. For 12a I have the answer, definition and extra letter but the wordplay is eluding me. Please can someone put me out of my misery?

Kitsune, marginally refers to the outside letters of the following word, then a place name

Hi Kitsune, this was one of the most difficult to parse for me..

12a - 2 letter "marginally receding" (minus extra letter) the "Fenland" is an are that is the last 3 letters (thank you Google!)

Kitchen, I see 12 across as the marginal letters of the second word (one of which is "extra"), plus the name of a Fenland place.

And dodgepot!

There seems to be some delay during which I don’t see new posts but thank you all for your help. All clear now.

Thanks for the help here! I got the whole grid but didn’t realise the instruction was to be carried out in place rather than on paper. Deducing that fact from the instructions, alterations became fairly obvious. Seems more than one path to pick out that “main character”, none of which lead to a very satisfactory ring. But no complaint there, it was a tricky call for Hypnos! Just mildly annoyed with 32D as the answer doesn’t fit the definition unless we add another word to it.

32d works fine; 4-letter word for "top of the head" according to Ed and Will (less it's first letter, followed by "a" for acting giving the "medley" answer
