Ah got it, thanks. I was bogged down on an alternative word that almost fit bar the last letter. All good now.

Glad you got it sorted Simon and, once again, sincere apologies for my error:-)

Not sure why you think this one is circular drxx? Each step followed the previous one, no requirement to solve 2 at once.

Like one or two others it seems, I raced through a lot of this and then it took me some while to finish off the last few. There is another letter that works in 1d that held me up for a while. But thought it was pretty good and hard enough overall.

My only issue is that the penultimate word of 24d is factually incorrect as far as I can see (and more than a little controversial).

No one has addressed the title. I wonder if it, too, contains an extra letter as the first word can become an important character who did the job. Or perhaps it is something else.

Pretty sure you’re correct. Actor born 04/39.

Like others I flew through the majority of the puzzle then spent just as long trying to parse the last 2-3 clues. I have the theme and character and I think I have the grid fill, but I can't see the soldiers in 13A, the city in 17D, and can't find the definition from 30D in Chambers.

A good puzzle regardless. Thanks for the solve Hypnos.

SH - the penultimate word in 24d is referring to language not geography.

Hi Cypherhouse,

30d - If my answer is correct, it's a person so won't be in Chambers.

13a - the "soldiers" are a 5 letter abbr. minus/'overlooking' "area" but also the extra letter.

The preamble says there are two entries in the filled grid that are not real words. I can't see any. What have I not done?

Cypherhouse - the "city" in 17d is a 2-letter postcode.
