Some of the extra letters are pretty tricky, Whistler. Just make sure you look for an initial and a surname and you should find it

A shame Hypnos didn’t add a final flourish. “Solvers should draw an exact circle through six cells spelling the name of a main character in the theme”. That would have been a lovely precise touch, an echo of 4788 by Quinapalus. Drxx would surely have approved

Before I put this one bed, can I just get some peace of mind regarding..

33a - Group from the East carrying around drinks (4)

I have the answer and the extra letter but, in all honesty, I can't say I'm 100% certain of the wordplay. For example, there's a word meaning 'group' that, minus the extra letter, leads to the answer, but it's anagammmed and there is no indicator - it does say from the East, suggesting it could be reversed - but it's not that either. You can also get to the answer by way of anagramming part of the clue but you then have to add another letter, only to then immediately remove it.

No doubt this is a lot simpler than I'm making it but, unfortunately, I'm so far down the rabbit hole now I'm having tea with the mad hatter!

Cancel that, I've just seen - power of posing and all that. The "group" is 4 letters not 5 and is indeed 'from the East'.

Brendan, re 33a. I took it as the Latin abbreviation for 'around' (in Chambers as 'about'), in 'group', reversed.

Yep, thanks Mattrom, I realised my mistake as soon as I posted. I'd got fixated on the foreign class system type group which, once one of the possible abbr. of "around" is removed, can be organised into the answer.

Are the first, second and last of the 6 letters in contiguous cells ?

Son1ofrover1,
They are all contiguous cells forming a long (as opposed to broad) elliptical shape. The 2nd and 5th letters of the name are diagonally contiguous with their neighbouring letters.
