I'm pretty ancient Prospero but I assumed this is a very common expression. Maybe not.

I must say I smiled at the rather risqué interface between 4d & 12ac :)

Just enjoying a very early couple of Paul Wellers due to equally early CAFC ko v Leyton. Cheers all!

It has its roots in the Bible.

Does 16d remind anyone else of a kids’ comic from the 1980s? Especially given the presence of Mary Whitehouse (or should that be Lighthouse?) in the clue to 11d?

Thanks to all those who explained how 24 linked to a certain fraction of the other solutions.

Did anyone else notice the pattern around the edge of yesterday's crossword (Guardian 29463)? I can never remember what those are called.

It's usually referred to as a Nina, elliptic, after an American cartoonist (Al Hershey) who worked his daughter Nina's name into every cartoon he drew.

I'm puzzled by more than one reference to "a certain fraction" of the other solutions. Surely simpler to say "all the other across solutions"?

I originally did that ("approximately 1/2 of the clues") very early in the thread, and explained that it was to avoid spoilers.
