It took a while for the penny to drop for me, geeker. Assuming that we are talking about the same clue, I would suggest that substituting ‘the others’ for ‘those’ might help…

Indeed, we are typing of the same clue! Perhaps a sign that I wasn't totally thick, as I had a great deal of trouble with that one. 🤣

No one could accuse you of being totally, or even slightly, thick, geeker! 😉😂
A fine example of a clue requiring the sort of out of the box thinking that we both enjoy.

Speaking of that clue, I can see how the answer "could come before" several others but can't see why Brockwell refers to them as "those going my way"?

Brendan, trying to avoid spoilers but that phrase pertains to approximately 1/2 (one half) of the solutions.

Okay, thanks Geeker - I'll have to mull on this a while longer:)

Brendan, think of the most straightforward "way" s in which the clues/solutions could be grouped.

A bit late to the party here, and struggling to follow this thread. I think I have all the solutions but I'm not sure I can see any special features, apart from a few alliterations and other connections.

I'm a bit unsure of 8a, although my answer parses beautifully with or without a definition. Is the definition the first word, because it seems only very loosely connected to the solution, unless there is some technical usage I'm unaware of? Or is this related to the special feature?

Hi Rainman,

8a - Yes, definition is a common synonym of first word, as in "what type of..." or "what ????? of..." - 3 letter "poem" goes inside 2 letter "small volume"

I see what you mean now Geeker after checking to find all of them in Chambers, but still not sure why they are "those going "my" way" specifically.

I agree that there are many types of ?????s but I don't think it follows that a ????? is a type. I may be wrong and I'm not even too bothered if a clue is a bit imprecise - I partly asked because the clue can be read as having no definition, and wondered if that was the special feature you have all been alluding to.
