ChrisE, I've had many a sleepless night about that myself...

No, sorry for being flippant! I've heard of Smetana, but that's about it. Still, there are many knowledgeable people on the Forum, so maybe someone will be able to clarify things for you....

chrise, I heard that too. VUL-tu-va is the correct pronunciation.

Radio 3 used to be very good at getting names right but standards are slipping. A few days ago I heard Timon (of Athens) pronounced as Timmon, rather than rhyming with Simon. At least they usually pronounce the final s's in Saint-Saëns and Dukas which quite a few people think are silent. (Strictly Saëns is sa-ons rather than just sons, hence the dieresis over the e, but I think that was overlooked by the composer's time.)

Then again I prefer Don Juan as Don Jew-un rather than Don Hwon and Don Quixote as Don Kwik-sot rather than Donkey-ho-tay.

I called at the market café for lunch today. I fancied an omelette, which comes with chips and salad, but it is made with 3 eggs and is a bit too much for me. On the other hand a 2-egg one is not enough. I have had this dilemma many times, and today I suggested a solution.

“A cheese and tomato omelette” and then, somewhat nervously, I asked Cassie “Could I have it with two-and-a-half eggs, please?”

I was not expecting this simple, but perhaps unusual, request to be received too well, but I was surprised by her reply.

“Would you like the yolk or the white for the half?”

I said it did not matter, and she called the order through to the kitchen.

“Two-and-a-half egg cheese and tomato omelette, yolk or white for the half.”

“Would ‘e like the ‘arf, ‘arf ‘n ‘arf?” came Paul’s reply.

I was taken aback. Chinese meals with rice and chips half-and-half are very popular here, but I have never had half an egg half-and –half.

Do you imagine that they whisk three eggs remove precisely one sixth of the mixture. That would be a very exacting procedure.

Glad you received such eggscellent customer service. I assumed they whisked one egg and halved it, then added the other 2. I suppose that amounts to Jono's method, but perhaps one- half is easier to judge than one-sixth?

Would you mind finding out what the cafe did with your leftover half-egg? I am always looking for new ways to preserve half-eggs and would be interested to know.

Hi grunger. Sorry for my late reply but I've not been taking much notice recently.

Smetana is SME-tu-nu.

A lot of people get Kodály and Lehár wrong because they put the stresses on where the accents are. It's KOH-die and LAY-har.

I will find out later this week what they did with it. I meant to ask Malone what she does with half-eggs.
