Thanks for that, HW7! I'm way too young for Latin, so I would never have got that in a zillion years.

Thanks for you assistance on the lines, Adeano. I get the idea of the two main ones from the misprints, but not the ones to do with the paired letters (despite hints earlier in this thread). Sometimes ones mind just doesn't work that way.

And I still can't see the name. The nearest I get is some French baritone singer, but I'm sure it's not him. Must have cocked up somewhere!

Assuming your grid fill is correct, you should notice some similarities in the letter sequences along both lines (making the pairs) - and then maybe several more! Draw a line between any such pairs

If you’ve correctly replaced the clashes, the name is spelled out in row order.

A bit of Wikipedia and google should then help with the pairs - it might also help to write out the two lines next to each other

Silly me, I had the first clash wrong! Thanks for making me go back and double-check. So, now I know what the endgame is all about - and I can't think of anything more dull.

*sticks head over parapet*

I quite liked the end game. I find these things quite simple but elegant in a fractal sort of way. 😊

Filled the grid, found the clashes, and added the construction. So mostly done, but:

-I’m missing three misprints
-I think 37a and 39a each contain a misprint, but can’t see what the missing letters in the message could be
-37a “Irish mobs…” I have the wordplay, but how does the definition work?
-39a “report of trench mortar…” again, see the wordplay, no clue about the definition
-the last missing misprint is the fourth-to-last, and I know what the letter is, but no idea which clue I’ve misparsed, they all seem to work with no misprint

I really liked the endgame btw, the corners of my primary school maths book were filled with these things

Hi Louweed

Well done!

37a - I Googled the the grid entry, followed by Irish

39a - no misprint. I asked for help about this a few posts back, which got me there

It might be worth looking again for the fourth last misprint - I suspect you’re skimming past it!

And I also enjoyed the endgame, my son in primary school has been drawing them recently too :)

I've come late to finishing this puzzle (distracted by Women's Euro matches) but thought I had cracked it.
However, 0pt0's post #53 has left me in two minds. No-one has contradicted the assertion in this post. However, I find nothing in the preamble or the two grid locations indicated by the 22 misprints to suggest that the two straight lines should not extend along the FULL length of these locations.
Can anyone please give a definitive opinion on whether 0pt0's truncated lines are correct or not?

Jif73 @ 89, I agree that there is no indication anywhere that the lines should be truncated.
