To each his ane and there are clearly some for whom this was not their cup of tea. For my part I couldn’t see anything to grumble about; it was an enjoyable challenge and a clear and rather elegant result for the endgame. Thank you, Hawk

SH, I can’t agree with that. I have no knowledge of the technology at all, and didn’t even know the name, but accurate parsing and the briefest use of Google was enough to work out the two alternative clues. It’s a pity they were unnecessary, perhaps, but they can’t be classed as unfair. I think naysayers should be careful not to project their dislike of the subject as flaws in the puzzle.

38a is a splendid clue. You need to think of two different spheres of primate. 41a requires the replacement of the last letter of the alphabet in a Buddhist priest. In 1d a stop is a woodwind instrument where an o is replaced by a Scottish (from Moray) word for search

Thanks q. Maybe I was a bit harsh. At least the endgame was unambiguous and quick and produced a pleasing result.

Got 1 and 41 now, thanks. Still can't see 38 - my answer has primate as the definition?

All done.

My problem (and I suspect the problem of others in my field) is that I'm too familiar with the "name" and where it is used nowadays. I had to investigate to find out what its original purpose was.

SH, no worries, I always appreciate your candour. In 38a that’s correct, but a different Primate needs adjusting. Also slang for a moderate degree from Oxbridge I managed to avoid (I won’t say in which direction)

Quisling #65 -Waddya mean, "moderate"?! A 'gentleman's degree', in my day. One converted it to a Master's after 2 years for a fee of 5 guineas.

Moderate meant “not excessive or extreme”, a compliment. Frank Bough was one of the last to be awarded a Fourth at Oxford. Now there was a man. These days you get a First for spelling your name correctly on the paper …

Not sure what you meant by your post #67. No answers given, no hints to the theme. By all means request removal if you disagree

I agree with the general delight in 38a which I've mentioned before; also the rather beautiful 'priest's last letter' in 41, unfortunately both smashed open a few posts back like a Sevres thurible in Pamplona;
but nobody, I think, has mentioned the sheer elegance of the risky exotic nuances conveyed by the exquisite sequence of substitutions in the clash of words at 29 (incidentally yielding the lost priest's last letter).
Thanks, Hawk
(I've forgiven you for all the time I wasted on 40a before I looked up.)
