Pretty new to the Listener, been trying in earnest since the New Year and so pretty chuffed to have got all of this bar the extra applications!

Needed this forum to finalise a few parsings - stuck on 39 across still. I have the full definition, but can’t make sense of the wordplay. Please would someone enlighten me!

Adeano, that’s a good effort if you’re new this year. This wasn’t an easy one. If you look back at #55 to #59 I think it was covered there. It’s one of the two unusual clues. Come back if it still doesn’t make sense

Thanks - yeah, I have the extended bit, but looking up the suggested homophone (from the earlier posts), I can get trench (maybe) but not trench mortar. Not sure what I’m missing!

I do make judicious use of the brb app, but in this case it’s failing me…

I’m new too - came here for help with 35A. I found it in the thread, but I can’t believe there’s so much unsolicited help given on this forum - it’s made the construction pretty obvious. Is this normal? And do people really need help in parsing an answer they’ve already found? It’s only giving the answer away to others who haven’t solved it yet.

Fair enough. Adeano. Search for words beginning with something that explodes if you step on it. Near the end. It is also in Bradford’s under trench. A useful addition, if you don’t have it. Could reduce your solving time by 10-20%

No worries. Virtually everything (bar some proper names and answers marked as such) is in the BRB. Sometimes you just need to dig a little. Look everything up, no matter how improbable.

I've been slogging my way through this one and have finally completed the grid, but I cannot parse 27 down. I can't even get close to parsing it And it's sending me nuts! Please, could someone give me a hint? I can't face reading any more about the honey possum in the hope of finding another name for it.

I think drawing the lines will be beyond me and can't see any obvious name from the clashes, but I can cope with that. But I cannot cope with this evil little honey possum.

Final paragraph of taxonomy section of the Wikipedia entry has the alternative name for honey possum you’re looking for. That’s how I found it!

The name is spelled out in line order.

And if you have the misprints, the lines are completely unambiguous.

A very small amount of Google image searching confirmed the construction, even though I know nothing about the topic
