The cells containing the original two lines should bear a notable similarity

For me, the preamble was completely baffling for almost the entire solve—until I had identified the thematic name (with which, fortunately, I was familiar) and had enough of the grid filled, including the "clashes," to start acting on it. Even at that point I went through quite a lot of indecision about which cells might be clashes. It was probably my most mystifying preamble to date (which, to be fair, doesn't consist of very many Listener preambles), although not the most difficult puzzle overall.

Thanks again Quisling. I had made the mistake of extending both my original lines by one cell too much. I should have realised that this was wrong as the two extra cells contained clashes and there would then have been doubt as to which of the three possible letters for each of these cells would apply. All is now clear. Thanks again!

I have finished this now (I think) and know where to draw the lines. But for the life of me I cannot parse 13down or 39 across (I know this is one with added application). Hints please!

Eenk, for 39a look up 7 letter words beginning with your grid answer. You will soon see one that makes sense.

For 13d see the final meaning of the last five letters in Chambers

Thanks Quisling, I hadn’t seen that definition before on 13d.

Re 39 across, yes, I had seen the suitable piece of kit, but do not understand the wordplay.

Eenk, the first part of 39a is a homophone. Think “mouse”

It’s an abridged form of a German term, beginning with the same three letters

Thanks again, Quisling. That was obscure!

Also not impressed. As evidenced by the comments in here, don't see how anyone not familiar with the tech would figure out the two additions, which were completely superfluous anyway. Proper GWIT.

23a clue is poor unless I have it wrong, as the first word means the definition doesnt work.

Can't figure out the wordplay for 38, 41 or 1d. Any hints welcome.

Thanks
