I think there will always be differing views on the approach to the Listener, especially on how much help can be given. I am sure the two threads system was set up with the best of intentions. Before then, if the Listener thread gave big hints or the occasional answer, many regular solvers were disappointed and horrified - and said so!
Although the 'Answers (If Requested) thread may look rather threatening, its presence is to encourage newer solvers and struggling solvers. As one of those myself, I know I would want an answer only as a last resort, but I know too the 'gentle hints' might be far too gentle for me. I personally am quite happy to be given bigger and bigger hints, but I wouldn't collapse in a crumpled heap if someone came along, asked for an answer and got it.. I think, hope, the majority of Listener solvers wouldn't seek out actual answers unless they felt totally stuck. I would also hope that a Crossword Help Forum would be ... helpful.
