I think there will always be differing views on the approach to the Listener, especially on how much help can be given. I am sure the two threads system was set up with the best of intentions. Before then, if the Listener thread gave big hints or the occasional answer, many regular solvers were disappointed and horrified - and said so!

Although the 'Answers (If Requested) thread may look rather threatening, its presence is to encourage newer solvers and struggling solvers. As one of those myself, I know I would want an answer only as a last resort, but I know too the 'gentle hints' might be far too gentle for me. I personally am quite happy to be given bigger and bigger hints, but I wouldn't collapse in a crumpled heap if someone came along, asked for an answer and got it.. I think, hope, the majority of Listener solvers wouldn't seek out actual answers unless they felt totally stuck. I would also hope that a Crossword Help Forum would be ... helpful.

I will discuss with admin. It says answers only and l just want answers. Maybe there should be 3 threads. Hints, answers and a thread for. Buzzb and his pals..

Could someone give me a nudge with 18 please? In 6, what exactly constitutes the anagram? I'm assuming the 'T' moves from first to last. Am I right that the entry for 38 ends in 'D'? It's just that that gives two 'D's in the last column and I was rather hoping that the first and last columns were heavily linked to the next line of the quatrain, which only contains one 'D'.

Hi Ukridge,

18d - 2 letter "cheers" + A Hot with last 2 letters reversed.

6d - penultimate word is anagrammed along with usual single letter "take".

38a - No, ends in N

Thank you Brendan. I thought that was the case for 6d but am I looking for a word that means 'seamy unions', because I can't find one? And sorry, I meant 33, not 38 for ending in 'D'.

Yes, Chambers defines it "seam-like junctions".

33a does end in D. This is the one that I parsed last of all, thinking the definition was "custom" but that just gives the first 3 letters and then the D with the definition being the last 2 words.

Thank you Brendan. I was hoping to use that as they key for the 'restoration' but it obviously doesn't fit the next line of the quatrain because of the two 'D's.

Ukridge....the eventual make up of the column confirming the theme is not from the quatrain , but 3 words from a spiritual , which will contain 2 d's.

I feel that post 42 is being terribly unkind to buzzb. He or she is simply echoing the feelings of the huge majority and made clear that she/he was being non-judgemental about the perceived rights and wrongs of the current situation in which we find ourselves.
