Thanks, loge. I couldn't see why it was Massachusetts or just plain ordinary speak out loud. I think, if i'm nitpicking, the Editors require a regional indication for the first usage however.

Interesting point that, Cockie. Chambers gives the first usage as especially and originally from that region, but that implies it can be a British usage too (I use it myself). I find regional indicators can be more of a hindrance than a help sometimes, as in one of the clues towards the end of this puzzle!

Chambers qualifications such as 'especially', 'rarely', etc don't require indicating in the clue, though some setters choose to do so.

I'm plodding along slowly, due in part to a bit of 'brain fog' which I am attributing to having my Covid booster yesterday afternoon. I am completely stumped by 6 and 8d, although I know the letter that moves in both cases having deduced to quatrain. I'm hoping some kind soul will give me nudge for either and help me out in my befuddled state. Thanks

In 6 the final word becomes an anagram indicator. In 8 you need an upturned abbreviation for the word that has shortened.

35 is a hidden word using regularly placed letters.
13 has wordplay in 3 parts, strata minus d + a word for approval of 2 letters in one for writing of 3 letters.
