I don't think scissors are necessary. The thematic items form a clear sequence which agrees with the column around which they are placed. I'd suggest printing a second copy of the grid rather than rubbing out, so you have your original grid to refer to.

Hear hear to Murky's second post.

What a great puzzle which I've finally completed. I was held up for ages by 30a. I've got the answer but don't understand the parsing or the baguette reference.
Also what does Wyman refer to in 39a?

NS, 30 is a word for to feel sick around N after what a baguette is an example of, minus its last letter.

39 This is a compound anagram so the letters of Wyman have to be removed from the fodder.

Agree it's an excellent puzzle. Took me a long time to see what was going on.

Just dropping in to agree that this was an excellent puzzle, even if it required a second printing. If I had a tiny hesitation it was with regard to the tiny 20a, which resisted until everything else was in. Because of the nature of the layout, there's no chance of cross checking the first letter in either the original or the final grid.
It also didn't help that the wiki version of the "another column" has a slight variation , not in our solution. But hey!

Well said, Murky!

And thanks to all the nudgers along the way to my finally getting there this morning. A very clever puzzle!

Luckily I don’t submit but I feel the ambiguity over new grid / scissors is a weakness in the preamble and presumably both would be allowed.

Really an excellent puzzle this week. Steady progress and multiple PDMs due to the letters moving about in the clues. Well done Little Hare!

Rad @ 86 - that's an excellent suggestion that may help to solve the perennial debate. Rather than a Caesar Cipher how about encoding using a Playfair Square with the puzzle title as the codeword? It is the Listener, after all!

Got there in the end. The gentle hints here gave me the impetus to keep going, so thanks to all for those. A satisfying denouement which brought back memories of singing with the kids. Fun!
