Measure of volume of sound from various directions (6)

Can anyone parse this for me, the answer is obvious but why "measure of volume"?

Many thanks Malone and Schorley. If I had Googled the message before posting I would have realised that G is the correct start for the fourth word. It took me a while to work out the decoding, but I eventually realised that when the preamble says "decode the grid", it means exactly that.

I thought this was a brilliant puzzle and a masterpiece of construction. It must surely be a contender for Puzzle of the Year.

Absolutely superb puzzle.

One loose end for me - can't see the wordplay for the protozoan. Saw the earlier hint, but that hasn't helped.

Thanks

Smellyharry, Protozoan's wordplay is synonym of 'name' (verb) around a geological period with its last letter removed.
I thought I'd left it a little late to be attempting to crack this puzzle, but yours was just before this one, so I'm glad I'm kept going!
Thanks to Shark for a tough workout with this wonderfully constructed grid.
Cheers, everyone who posted hints; I didn't Thanks to Shark for a tough workout with this wonderfully constructed grid. them all, but each one I did use helped me to push on to the finishing line.
I still have a couple of queries though…
1 I have five "normal" clues with redundant words. The middle one is the first in the clue but doesn't seem to fit well with the other words. Am I correct?
2 In the final part of the endgame, the letter I've changed is in one of the words of the location which doesn't seem ideal. Is that right?

Oops! Paragraph 4 should be:

Cheers, everyone who posted hints; I didn't need them all, but each one I did use helped me to push on to the finishing line.

Thanks Jif.

Yes, the letter to be changed is in the location, slightly untidy but forgivable given the brilliance and complexity of the puzzle.

Not sure I understand your first question. Yes 5 clues with extra words. The extra word in the third of them is the seventh word in the clue, not the first, if that's what you mean.

The 5 words when read together do form a coherent description of what you need to do the uncoding.
