I read it as - 'symbol' = sgn with the 'one'/ 'being' the two letter abbrev.

...but that doesn't work (and I've fallen foul of the brackets thing again!)

I parsed it as a &lit, with symbol being "SIGN", replacing I (one) with a musical note (E), adjoining O (end of echo)

Yes, that works much better. Not keen on the vague note = A to G, especially in a puzzle this hard, but one can't argue with the parsing. Thanks.

I often use square brackets for marking off unused letters - but things just disappear + italics spring up everywhere.

...my brackets 'technique' became necessary when the ban on caps came into force - nice to see them back!

Hello!

And help!!!! I've cold-solved quite a lot of the clues, but really don't know how to get going on the grid fill. I'm also struggling with 1a, so please could someone give me a hint for that? And perhaps also let me know which of its letter are joined together in a single cell? Maybe that'll be enough to allow me to understand how the grid fill works.

Thanks,
Suzannah

Thanks ever so much , drxx! I had shiner in my head for black eye, and once it got in there, I just couldn't get past it. Now let's see if I can get moving on the grid fill...
