Don't you just marvel at the ingeniousness of our setters.
This one is amazing, the way everything fits into the story line.

Simon9x. Yes, there are words to remove from the down clues. These will be essential in solving the endgame.

Thanks, Simon. I was thrown by having solved some Downs that didn’t have extras and suddenly finding one. I’m not sure (yet) why some Downs are deemed ‘normal’ but others not. Maybe it’s those that have shared cells vs those that don’t? Let’s see. Thanks again

Simon9x. In the across clues, the word “normal” indicates the grid entry length corresponds to the number in brackets. In the case of the down clues, because you have no visibility of their position in the grid, it is not immediately possible to discern what is or is not a “normal” clue. Suffice it to say that the preamble is consistent. So expect some down clues’ entry lengths to be entered exactly as shown in their respective brackets; others will be “compacted” so the entry is shorter. The wordplay still indicates the length of answer. Hope this is not teaching grandmother to suck eggs.

I have the message, apart form the eighth letter ,where I get E/R. Can’t get the down clue In Perth…

The extra words are not making any sense at the moment. Should they form a sentence?

As for decoding……..

Dylan, the "In Perth" clue is a word for "new ball" in cricket minus its initial letter "caught" - definition is a Scots word for "destroy"

Measure of volume: the def is the last four words (think audio)

Symbol: I think this is an &lit (may be wrong about that) but the answer is a symbol in music (it's Italian)

Being exposed... first six words are the def (concentrate on "run this")
