All done, save the final step, so please could someone confirm In which direction the triangle is oriented - northwards, etc - and whether my assumption that none of the letters forming it are in the separate column is correct ?

sonofrover- assuming you know the name you’re looking for at this stage, it should pop out as there aren’t many places where a triangle of six one letter cells can actually fit in the completed grid.

You’re right that it doesn’t include the separate column.

Thanks cd. Found it now. I had in fact deleted the cells containing 2 letters from my draft grid in order to find the quarry/culprit before posting, but was fixated with equilaterals !

Foinaven SLUR is used here as a musical term. Think of a three letter word for a gun, usually associated with America, and a four letter word for decoy.
MAYBE TELL tell is the definition, but not in relation to speaking. Second definition in Chambers.

I feel very foolish. I have completed everything bar the first letter of the down clue CHARACTERS. Please can someone put me out of my misery?

A very clever grid fill. Thank you, Shark.
