Slow going here too. Would anyone be kind enough to hint towards:

"...lad working willingly [4]"

and/or

"Exam not initially in accord with principles [4]"?

Family lad (3) working like electricity (2). Extra letter. Common word, doesn’t usually mean willing, but in Chambers.
Don’t know exam one!

Lwo - three letter word for a familial lad. Two letter word meaning working. And one of the letters is extra.

Do you all know any sneaky resources for looking up Spenserian words without knowing them cold? I can’t find a list of common vocabulary/terms from his works or from that era.

It’s been 40 years since I read the Faerie Queen!

If you can get your hands on the old Chambers CD-ROM (not the app), you can do a full text search for 'Spenser'.

If you have some idea of the right synonym to choose, you can do like: 'Spenser & honour'.
