that was my thought - seems pretty unfair to have to add two letters (esp not next to each other) - assuming i have right answer of course!

Before I stumble blindly any further into this Labyrinth, could any solvers who are through it please offer me a few bits of string?

I've decided to act on "which are entered normally" in the preamble, so only attempting to enter cold-solved Across solutions, based on their logical / symmetrical distribution.

Taking ? as a cell NOT containing any part of the across solutions, my distribution pattern for top row is (first 3 solutions) 4 ? 4 ? 7. So, bottom row = 7?4?4 (last three Across clues SUBMERSIONS / SLAVE / NICHE)

1. First bit of string:- is this right?

I've got 7 letter RENDEZ-VOUS at start of row 2, and 7 letter HIGHWAYS at end of row 12.

2. Second bit of string:- Is that right?

I've assumed Row 7 contains two 5 letter words (clues starting TEE & ANTICIPATING) and row 6 is 9,8 (PETREL & B&Q STOCK), and row 8 is 8,9 ( THE HORROR + 3 word GAME).

3. Third bit of string :- is that right?

For the sake of convenience, let's call these questions
1, 2 & 3. If they are wrong, could helpers suggest the correct distribution?

agree bobbycollins - this is def to make sure they dont have too many 100% solvers! pretty incomprehensible preamble and seemingly lots of things to do with clues (at least from the small amount of clues i think i have solved)!

Turast, yes to 1 and 2, IMHO.

3, looks good...not sure where your 5, 5, goes in row 6 yet though?

re 9 letter in row 6, that doesnt seem to work with my downs in columns 1 and 3 (bookcase one and popular book). does this i have gone wrong?

@bananabean: answer is last three words (it's an alt. spelling). wordplay is charade of first three words - first part if synonym of frist word with extra letter and 2nd part is "tree fruit" (plural) (think british propagandist for the germans in wwii)
